Historical Examination on Creativity

*cough*

Okay sorry I have no idea how to start so I cough. tee-hee.

We are supposed to do some research on people and the time to make us understand more about creativity. Now, I will not focused only on certain civilization or era, but I would make a general research about it. The common things that are affecting us or things that are relevant to being creative.

Guess I will start with the first question of week 4 blogpost ( now is week 13 tee-hee )

What kind of TRAITs make people creative?
according to my observation as well as some little research that I have done, I realized that some of the famous and amazing piece were actually a copy. Of course not everyone does this, but I can say around 50% of some creative piece was actually a copy. In other words, these people develop the trait to copy someone's original idea and improve or "sharpen" it. I wouldn't say that they are copy cat, because it is in fact, they obviously aren't. I would prefer it more to call this trait as "observant". We human love to observe things, and everyone obviously aren't gifted with the ability to gain idea easily. A lot of people take a lot of times to look for an idea, and what's more, the idea might come in an unexpected moment. So usually, when they're trying to find some idea, which I would also call, looking for a way to be 'creative', they would search for things on internet, observing other people's work, or they would observe the things around them. Even during the ancient time they've done this, it doesn't imply to the people during this era only. For example, in Rome, most of the famous Rome arts are actually a copy of Greek's art. The sculpture that the Romans did were originally based on Greek's art. They just re-made them and improve them, which then makes it more renowned. Other than that, if you want more example, I'll tell you the more obvious one. Steve Job. When iPad was made, it 'WOW' the whole world. People are amazed. Absolutely amazed. However, who's idea was it first to make a tablet? yup that's right, Microsoft. Steve Job observe the thing that Microsoft invented, even though it was not renowned and not many really look at it, and then, he re-made them. IMPROVE them, and thus, it has become, a NEW thing. Shiny!

Bill Gate' first tablet

Steve Job's iPad

Not only that, those people who originally made the something without copying other's idea, also actually based on other, in someway or another. They are all based on what they see, what they observe, for example, the creation of the mother nature or the surrounding area, and then convert them into something. So basically, it is undeniable, that all people have this trait. Come on, don't lie, think back, about all the works that you've done, all the art piece you made, it was all based on your observation of other people's work or the thing surround you. You can never hide from it. Even I would admit. These has happen long since the ancient times.

Next, what kind of environment made people creative?

As for what I have researched, all kind of environment could affect us. And in fact, the environment that we live on during our childhood is would affect us the most. When I talk about the environment, I don't specifically meant the place surrounding us, but also, our lifestyle. People tend to get affected more when they were exposed to something for a long time, especially all the time during their childhood since children are easily affected, in a good way. Why I say in a good way is because, many of our famous people are all actually being exposed to such thing during their childhood. For example, Steve Job were raised in a place where there were many engineers, and thus, it has affect him into having those 'engineer brains' . As for the ancient Romans, they all lived during the times of Greek, when Greek are widely spread, and that too has affect them. Most of the Romans art are based on the Greek's style. Another good example are the Japanese people. Japan are one of the most creative inventor. They have invent some little simple thing but brilliantly. These are because Japan has been independent since the ancient time. During war when they don't have much allies, they practically done everything on their own without relying on other country to survive. They invent things, create a new way of solving things in order to survive. This has happen for a long time in Japan, they have been thinking creatively, and that has affect their generation as they were grew up in an environment when people could thing differently. Even in the way people has never thought of, or would even think ridiculous, because they have been raised to feel it's fine to think like that. Their limit of thinking is more than others. Last but not least, even our great musician also have the same situation. Ludwig van Beethoven. He was being exposed to music since he was born as his father himself was a musician. His childhood are surrounded by music, and music, has 'dissolved' in him and he has taken interest in it. And now, as we all know, he is a truly great musician indeed.

Lastly, the process of creativity.
For this, I would like to point out again about the childhood and traits. I think the process about getting someone to be creative actually start right away the moment you were born. I did not say it was too late to learn to be creative once you are an adult, because I like the saying, it's never too late! But the perfect process is that, you should be exposed into thinking creatively when you are young. Since when you are young, your mind are fresh, free from being influenced by people. As you grow up, no matter how you might try to avoid it, you will always get 'poison' by other people. Hearing people's experience, people saying, observing the world, would poison you, in both good way and bad way actually, but mostly bad, because it limit your creativeness. As a child, you would never thing of anything to be ridiculous. Have a flashback, when you're a little kid, thinking of creating a door that could teleport won't be ridiculous at all, but what about now? ridiculous isn't it? Such thing wont happen! everyone will grew to think that. But seriously, frankly speaking, I am not surprise if someday it would be invented. For example, the times before telephone was invented, surely, the people back then would think that it is impossible for you to talk to someone that are so far away without giving a solid thing to them (letter, etc). Such thing as telephone would be a magic. But it was invented anyway, by Alexander Graham Bell, as we all know.

" I invent phone, problem? "

His family are all have a connection in hearing and speaking, in someway or another. His father, grandfather and brother work on elocution and speech, and his wife and mother are deaf. Because he was surround by this kind of situation all his life, it has affected him. He has done research on hearing and speaking which then lead him into creating such device. See, the process is simple. You just have to be exposed, but be exposed in a right way, not the way that could poison and limit your 'access'. So parents, raised your children in a proper way. Don't let them down or discourage them.

The PC is dead, Long Live Tablet

When PC was invented, everyone thinks that it was the greatest thing and I'm pretty sure everyone think that nothing could compete with it.Computers are often getting upgraded as time pass by, and each time, it became better and much more better, which again, has made everyone believes that nothing can be greater than it.

"THIS IS DA BEST!"

However, once upon a year.............. TADAA~~~~~~

A TABLET APPEAR!

" WALAOWEH! "

so what is this flat rectangle thing???? something that shock the WORLD!
It was first being recognized by the world as iPad which was released by Apple company, though Microsoft did invented first, but Apple company made it renowned to the whole world. And then what???? the number of people using iPad are greatly increasing each day! and what's more, more and more company are joining this market and invent their own tablet with their own specialities. And because of that, tablet are widely used now. A lot of people are bringing tablet everywhere now rather than bringing laptops. It is obviously taking over the world bit by bit, but fast!

so now let's talk about how fast did this happen.
It was renowned somewhere in 2010, and by 2012, you can see people holding tablet everywhere already.

Tablet is a combination of so many things! By just holding this flat rectangle gadget, you're able to do so many things!

here a picture of the things that are " INSIDE " of tablet.

Could you ever believe it? You might not realize it but NOW YOU DO! 50 years ago, if you wanted to do anything that these things can do at some other place, you would need to carry like, I don't know, maybe 2 large bags???? one bag for each thing? it would be pretty tiring!
those who were born 50 years ago surely could never imagine that one day you could carry " all these things " with just one hand! And what's more, very light too!

So what does this tell us? Invention and innovation can happen in the way we would never expect! and fast too!

Sir Ken Robinson on TEDtalks

Again, I am terribly late for this post, it was supposed to be posted like..... last year?
heh, true, by last year of course I mean somewhere in 2012, right now is already 2013 whether you believe it or not.

So, somewhere last year, we were asked to watch a video on Sir Ken Robinson's talk and we were assigned to post what strike us the most about his talk. The talk was entitled "Do School Kill Creativity?"

If you ask me, personally, I could not point out any part that I think is the greatest in his speech. Why? because the whole speech itself are truly great. Whenever I try to think that " oh this part was good" but then as his speech goes, there are many other part that are as great as the one I think was great. Sir Ken Robinson is truly brilliant, and he does know what he is talking about. That is all what I can say. But maybe that is because I am not the type who listen to speeches that's why I don't have much comment about it. However, what I actually do want to say about his speeches  are, the way he give the speech. He doesn't just simply state his point, but he put it some humour in it, which make it enjoyable to listen. I watch the whole video even though I really dislike hearing speech, but truthfully, I find it quite enjoyable. He doesn't put any stupid or lame jokes, but he change the way he giving out the speech. He plays with the word and I think that, this is the real creativity.

Well, whatever I say, it is but a lie when I say there's no part that I like the most. Of course there is! some several words that I truly agree with.

The first one is when he say

"Now, I don’t mean to say that being wrong is the same thing as being creative. What we do know is, if you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original. If you’re not prepared to be wrong. And by the time they get to be adults, most kids have lost that capacity. They have become frightened of being wrong."

It is quite true, no, not quite, it is ultimately true. Some people may have some ideas in their mind. Perhaps some wild crazy but brilliant ideas! but they never say it out. Why? because they are afraid of people may object it. Or people might say something bad about it or strongly say it will never work. And that person himself, are afraid of creating a failure. This is what stops them! If only there are people around them who could support them and make them believe that they would succeed, then it's good. Perhaps this world could change a lot more to better than it is now. However, if there's no one to support them, then they themselves must support themselves. Like Thomas Edison. He fails 10,000 times, but he never give up. He still stick to his idea and keep trying until it works. And thanks to that, our world are now bright with wonderful lights.

The second part that I like in the speech was the part where he say

"Picasso once said this, he said that all children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up. I believe this passionately, that we don’t grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather we get educated out of it. So why is this?"

So why is that? why are we being educate out of it? it is because sometimes we got scold for being creative whether you believe it or not. Take an example, I bet everyone have scribbles on their school's exercise book before, and then what do we get? scolding, yes, or we would even get punished for doing that. That is why, we are scared, of doing it, scared of putting our ideas and scribble it out. As we all know, ideas just don't come when you want it, ideas would come, OUT OF NOWHERE, it has happen to you hasn't it? for sure, idea don't just come to you when you call it, it will come when it wants to. Maybe in the toilet, maybe when you are eating, or when you are about to sleep, or even when teacher is busy teaching in front. Kids are especially rich with imagination and thus, they actually have a lot of ideas, and because they did not know what to do, the draw it out, doodle it, scribble it on what they could, and get scolding from it. And after that, they were taught not to do it anymore, and thus, they grow out of being creative, and just burn any idea that comes.

p/s: If you really want to hear the speech, let me save you from trouble and provide the link :) simply click here~!
and yea, not to forget, thanks to one of my classmate named Luqman for providing the link to Sir Ken Robinson speech transcript on his blog. ( I hardly understand his speech at first because of his wonderful accent)

" Not Creative "

Okay then now let's continue to the next topic which will be the opposite of what we discussed earlier!
What word do you think, does not at all related to creative?
Let me take a guess again!!!!!

is it........

Dull?

Common?

Boring?

Same?

and.....

Trend?????

Is it correct????

What no? You have different words than these?
Oh well, doesn't matter, almost similar for sure eh? So now I'm going to describe about these words to you!

First of all, DULL.
Why does DULL doesn't give us the feeling of creativeness?
It's all because something that is dull, is not attractive, and also can be consider as something old. Take an old cloth as example. If you just bought a cloth, of course the colour would be striking! and rich! I should say. But what happen to it years later? What happen to it after it being washed so many times? The colour would go off of course! and yes! become DULL! back to our main word! and what does the dullness of the colour tell us? It's OLD! it's not attractive and makes us feel like we don't want to use it any more! if something that is creative, it would be something NEW. some NEW idea. Something that we would want to use!

Now you clearly see the difference right?????

okay move on~ enough of 'dull' or else it will make my brain go DULL!

Second word, Common

What does common means? it's an opposite word for RARE. Common things are normal things. An extremely normal thing that you can find just EVERYWHERE! To make you understand what I really mean, let me give you a situation. Lets say I wanted to be mean and add chilli into your soup! and I wanted to take your attention away so I said " hey look there! a pegasus flying! "

seriously would you believe that? that is soooooooooooooooooo common isn't it? "hey look there something's there~ " people around the WORLD use it. People seldom believe it anymore now. If it's 50 years ago, then maybe yea people would believe since it's rare for them for someone to say this. But now everywhere you go, if someone wants to pull on a trick to other they would always use it.

Omg these insect is so common that you just kill it without a second thought :O

lol (sorry ants)

next~

What boring? yea boringgggg is the word! oh what? oh you are actually saying this is boring huh? okay then nevermind.............. you can stop reading now * sob sob * no, please don't goooooo, continue reading come on!!!!!! I'll explain to you about the word boring and you shall not be bored anymore! :D

so yea, I'll start now before you fell asleep! Boring is obviously not related to creative because when a thing is boring you don't feel like using it or playing with it or doing it or whatever with it. So it is obviously not creative because the creator of that boring thing is not creative enough to make it fun for you! So that's why BORING will never be related to creative! For an example!
Talking about my experience, when I was watching a comedy show, the jokes are always boring and not funny at all. Why? because they have no idea of how to make a funny and enjoyable jokes! they have run out of their creativity to make one! hence, all the jokes are lame and boring. It's not even worth to waste your time watching it. And what did they do to make you feel like as if it's funny? put a laughter voices! but all comedy does that, so what do you feel when you watch it. That's right. BORRRRINNNGGGGG~~~~~~~~

this are what you see when you heard a boring joke!

So feel refresh a bit now?

Move on again to the second last one!

SAME.

Aren't same thing makes you feel like " oh........that again " or " hm....... " or  " another one huh... "
or sometimes, it even makes you don't feel anything! Sometimes you would just look at it and turn away! Try to imagine if you go out and see people wearing t-shirt with this at the middle

you would just look at it, and maybe read the last word and turn away the other second! because it's basically the same thing! Only the word change! It's the same design. People around the world use this design now, don't they have any other idea on a shirt design? yea it was popular few years ago, but now? nahhhh, not as popular anymore, because everyone use it. And it feels as if everyone actually wear the same shirt! and it's like, there's nothing exciting to see anymore since it's all just like that isn't it? The person who created this design is creative, but the other people who keep using the same design for many things over and over again eventhough many people are using it too are obviously not creative!

Last one! after reading this you may go watch some video in youtube yeah right?

Trend.

During every era there's always a new trend. But the new trend would last long before the other trend comes up. And during those period of time, people would keep using that trend, until some random creative minded person created the new trend. Why cant people keep creating new things?
So that TREND wouldn't exist! it would be great if everyone have their own thing. Following trend is actually copying people's idea! and many people does that, so this trend thing, would actually stay " WOAH " for just a short period of time. After that, people would get so used to it and not feel hyped up about it anymore. That's why trend, is not a creative thing! Take an iphone and an android as an example. Nowadays almost everyone use it. It's the trend now that people use these phone! Wherever you go, At least 7 out of 10 of them use this phone. Last time, when you see people using iphone or an android, you would go " woah woah!!!! let me see let me see~~~~~~~ can I play with it? can I try using it? blah blah blah blah? " rightttttt? but now, if you see someone change their phone to one of these phone, all you would go is " oh, you changed your phone.... "
so yea, get what I mean????

CREATIVE

Creative huh?
A very simple yet complicated word to explain.
What pops up in  our mind when we hear it?
YOU! yes you, what do you think of when you read the title?
May i take a guess?
is it......

Unique?
Different?
Bizarre?
Colourful?
or........
Amazing?

If yes then that's good!
because these words are what i'm going to talk about!

Why is creative unique?
What is unique?
Unique is something that is rare, something that is only one. Something that when you see, you feel like " wow, what on earth is that? but nevermind! it looks good!"
something like that! or sort of like that.
So that's why it define creative the best. Creative IS unique. Since it's new. It's something that amazed people. In a good way of course! and also, it's something that perhaps only 1 out of 1000000000 people would think of! Take a look of this! an example of what unique is!

Next!
Different!
Everybody loves something different! But as things it is now, a lot of things has been invented. Sometimes even when there's an advertisement saying " NEW " , it's not actually new, it's just the same thing, but with DIFFERENT kind of display/appearance/looks/the way of it functioning. That's why people love it! How do we make old things become attractive? Make it different! yes! when it's basically just the same thing. Humans just love to be different than other people. Seriously, you can't fool me, most of the population actually like being weird. They like being different than being normal and common, there are billions or trillions of people in this world, and being different than others are definitely a hard thing to do, so that's why, when you are actually DIFFERENT, you are consider CREATIVE. To actually being able to think of a way of being different is absolutely creative!

Let's move on to..... BIZARRE!
such a weird word to be pronounce if you ask me.
it's WEIRD and its suits it's meaning, that's why its CREATIVE no?
Something extraordinary! Something incredibly weird! Something that seems like it was from an outer space! IT's BIZARRE! perhaps something that you could never have imagine or think of! something you could only see for only that time! Something that may not logical but it exist! how could such thing be created?
with creativity that's it! Surely if you encounter such thing, you will be thinking, " how creative!".

so what's next?
let's scroll up and check!
COLOURFUL
Why does this word describe creativity?
it's because COLOURS attract people!
just imagine if you look at something dull, something that has the same colour, same tone, for an example, something plain white. Imagine yourself walking pass trough a hall way, and something plain white is on the right side, and something full with colours. Which side will you look at? which will attract your attention more? or should i say, which one, will you be interested in? the colourful one of course! i bet majority of people would think that too! However, it's not that when an object has a colour, it's creative. NO. If its like that, then everyone can create creative things no? Showing creativity by colours is when you combine colours, so many colours, and make it look good! like RAINBOWS!!!!! Try to think of the colour blue and orange, does it suits to be with each other? yes? no? the answer is, YES AND NO, it actually depends. It depends on YOU, how will you present it?! if the way you combine and put them together is wrong and bad, then it won't look nice at all! it may even irritates people who see it! But when you put it together in an incredibly GOOD way, then people will like it of course!
But then surely people would be thinking. Why? How come? it's still blue and orange but how could they look nice? that's why it is called CREATIVITY! how will you put the colours together to make it look amazing? Creativity is the answer!

Last but not least!
AMAZING!
What is your feeling when you see something so incredible? you would be AMAZED indeed.
it's just, amazing. Creativity creates amazing things. Attracting things! its not normal and common.
Its rare and perhaps legendary. Its amazed you and its almost like, you are being indulge in it. You are eager to have it, to be there, or to try it. Because you've never have it before, never feel it before. You are amazed. Humans are complicated. Humans are also selfish and picky. There are trillions of things exist in this world, but just how many things could amazed humans? out of trillions, maybe just million of it. It's very hard to amazed people. So when you actually create something AMAZING. That is CREATIVE.

Why did Titanic hit the iceberg?

Oh gosh i should've post about this topic long time ago!
Why did Titanic hit the iceberg? this is a topic that I was suppose to post at the end of October! but then why now? why is it that only now I'm going to post about this topic? Easy! it's because of my laziness, and I am terribly apologize about that. I know it's really not a good thing.

Well, anyway, let's not waste time and get started!

As we all know, Titanic hit the iceberg and sank and lot's of people died and so on.
But the main question here is, why? why did Titanic hit the iceberg?
Isn't Titanic a great ship? Why does it sank by only hitting the iceberg?
And in the first place, how could it hit the iceberg? wasn't there anyone controlling the ship?
What was the captain doing? Very careless isn't he?

So here is what I think.

The men who was suppose to watch over the situation, which is the "watcher" that was standing on top, was not doing their job properly. All of them were having a party that night, people from the lower class to the higher class. So, I bet even the watcher was caught up with the "party mood" and wasn't really paying much attention to what they are suppose to do. Perhaps hard drinks are even given to them for them to enjoy too.
So my assumption is. They consume some alcoholic drink and was feeling tipsy and can't focus well. So, even though maybe the iceberg was already visible despite the foggy environment, it took some times for them to notice it since they were feeling tipsy, and when they notice it, the distance between the ship and the iceberg is already quite near. Of course they would inform the captain after that, but did they do it fast enough? i don't think so. And even if they did, I bet the captain will have this mindset of " oh, this great ship of mine won't be in any harm even if it were to hit the iceberg a bit!". With this kind of thinking, perhaps the captain too wasn't taking an action fast enough to avoid the iceberg. Taking his sweet time maybe? or taking the situation lightly and didn't put much effort in trying to avoid it.
And so what's the result of all that?
What happen then?
BAM!
Yes, the Titanic sank because of the iceberg!
